Architect & Biodesigner, Shneel Malik is investigating ways in which our buildings, and our urban environments can perform biological systems such as photosynthesis. By designing at the intersection of architecture, biology and engineering, her projects are constructed from a novel living material. A material that supports the growth of microorganisms on a nanoscale, while allowing the fabrication of living, breathing systems on a macroscale. She challenges architecture to move one-step beyond the adoption of geometric forms that simply look like nature. But instead, an architecture that ‘performs’ like the systems in nature.

In her masterclass, she discusses the evolution of a radical methodology, involving - biomaterials, biofabrication, & biodesign. A thought process recognised as imperative for tackling climate change. The prototypes discussed in the talk are developed for applications, such as - cleaning polluted water, and generating energy through the photosynthet
